Dear Buckeye Family Member,

Happy Canada Day! Summer is here and there is no doubt about it. The kids are out of school for another year and for many people that means that it is time to move up to the cottage! Whether your cottage is your summer home or your weekend escape we know that warm sunny weather and shining waters are calling your name and you can't wait to get up and enjoy it all.

There is no time like July to enjoy the best that boating has to offer. It all begins tomorrow as we watch the fireworks from the prime location...on the water! We know that there is lots to do at the cottage but we are hoping that you also might be looking for a change of pace or scenery. With this in mind we have created a number of fun filled boating events to spice up your summer. From demo rides, to boating courses, cruise club outings to BBQ's we have got a boating activity that is sure to excite your family this month. So come out and join something a little different from the same old same old...who knows you might find a new adventure to add some sizzle to your summer. We have included a brief outline below highlighting what events we have going on to peak your interest. Remember they are open to all Buckeye boaters!

We have also included some green boating tips to help you help us keep the water clean for the next generation. We hope you enjoy!

So get out enjoy some fun and excitment on the water this summer...we know we will!

HOW TO BE A CLEANER BOATER!
We don't have to give up boating to save our lakes, but we can take precautions to ensure that our lakes and environment will outlive us in its current (or better) condition. Here are some easy to implement environmentally friendly boating practices. Please remember that while some of these tips apply only to powerboats, canoes and kayaks are equally responsible for maintaining our aquatic environment. Because canoes and kayaks can often reach inlets and other areas that powerboats cannot, we must proceed with caution when we are using them to ensure that aquatic life is not disturbed or distroyed.

Contain Garbage - Don't throw or let garbage blow overboard and stop to retrieve any items that do mistakenly blow a drift. To help keep wrappers and packages from being sucked up by the wind, pack food in reusable containers. And for smokers out there PLEASE don't toss your cigarette butts overboard- they're made of plastic and are harmful to aquatic life.

Fuel Cautiously -Remember fuel expands as it warms up so make sure you fill safely. Always fill your tank just before leaving on a trip. If you fill upon return only fill to 90% allowing room for expansion. To avoid skills, always fill portable fuel tanks ashore and if you aren't sure how much fuel you will need to fill your tank make sure you have an oil absorbent cloth to catch any excess fuel which may drip out of the fuel intake or overflow vent. If you have a situation where there is fuel entering the water make sure that you contact a gas dock attendant as they should have the proper skills and tools to clean up the mess in an appropriate manner. Please note: The old "pour dish soap on the oil lick" trick is NOT safe for the environment and is NOT recommended as a way to clean up spills. The soap adhears to the oils and together they sink to the bottom allowing the fuel and soap to contaminate the soil.

Maintain Your Vessel Wisely - Similarly to your car engine, making sure that your boat's engine is running in top condition will prevent excess fuel and lubricant usage. Similarly the cleaner the running surface is the more effecient your engine will run as well. The easiest way to accomplish this is to keep a sponge or shamy on board and each time you are at anchor or put your boat on the lift give it a quick wipe. Keep your engine compartment clean so you can spot and leaks and make sure that you have a bilge boom to absorb any oil which happens to end up in the bilge. Ask about biodegradable cleaners for your boats interior and exterior...remember every little bit counts.

Be a Responsible Boater- Remember keeping our lakes clean is up to all of us so take a minute to learn more about environmentally safe products and practices. Spread the word...the more boaters share this information the further a head we will be to protecting our waterways. Encourage others to be clean boaters too! This includes suggesting that marinas and other on water boating facilities have trash cans, recycling bins and carry green boating products.
